A MacBook flashing folder with question mark is one of those faults that can make your stomach drop. Instead of reaching your login screen, your Mac is telling you it cannot find a working startup disk. The good news is that this does not automatically mean your files have gone. The bad news is that repeatedly trying random fixes can turn a recoverable software issue into a more difficult data recovery job.

That flashing folder appears before macOS starts, so the problem is usually linked to the internal storage, the macOS installation, or the Mac’s ability to locate the correct startup volume. Start calmly, avoid erasing anything until you understand the situation, and work through the safest checks first.

What the flashing folder and question mark means

Your Mac needs a startup disk containing a usable version of macOS. When it cannot see one, it shows the folder icon with a question mark. Think of it as a signpost rather than a precise diagnosis: it tells you where the failure is happening, but not necessarily why.

Sometimes the cause is simple. A failed update, an interrupted reinstall or a changed startup disk setting can leave macOS temporarily unavailable. In other cases, the internal SSD may be failing, the drive connection may be damaged, or there may be a fault on the logic board.

The timing matters. If the folder started flashing immediately after a macOS update, a power cut or the battery running flat during installation, software is a realistic possibility. If the Mac had been freezing, taking ages to start, showing disk warnings, or losing files before this happened, treat storage failure more seriously.

First checks before attempting a repair

Switch the Mac off properly by holding the power button until the screen goes black. Disconnect all accessories, including external hard drives, hubs, USB sticks and card readers. A faulty peripheral or an external boot device can occasionally confuse startup.

Wait a few seconds, then start it again. If the folder returns, listen and observe. Older MacBooks with mechanical hard drives may make clicking or repeated spinning noises when the drive is failing. Modern MacBooks use solid-state storage, so they are usually silent, but unexplained restarts, a very hot chassis or a Mac that cannot enter recovery can still point to hardware trouble.

Avoid repeatedly forcing restarts for hours. It is unlikely to fix the underlying issue and, if the storage is unstable, it can make a fragile system less reliable.

Start your Mac in macOS Recovery

Recovery Mode is the safest place to investigate because it runs independently from your usual macOS installation.

Apple silicon MacBooks

On a MacBook with an M-series chip, shut it down fully. Press and hold the power button until you see “Loading startup options”. Select Options, then choose Continue to open Recovery.

Intel-based MacBooks

On an Intel MacBook, switch it on and immediately hold Command + R. Keep holding the keys until you see an Apple logo, spinning globe or Recovery screen. If standard Recovery does not appear, try Option + Command + R for Internet Recovery. This downloads recovery tools from Apple, so it needs a reliable Wi-Fi connection.

If your Mac asks for a password, use an administrator account password where prompted. On devices protected by FileVault, you may also need the password for an authorised user to access the encrypted volume.

Use Disk Utility – but do not erase the drive yet

Once in Recovery, open Disk Utility. Select View in the menu bar, then choose Show All Devices. This is important because it lets you see the physical internal drive as well as the volumes underneath it.

Look for the internal storage in the left-hand sidebar. Depending on the Mac and macOS version, you may see names such as Macintosh HD, Macintosh HD – Data, Apple SSD, or an APFS container.

If the internal drive appears, run First Aid from the lowest volume upwards, then on the container and finally the physical drive. First Aid can repair some directory and file-system errors. Let it complete each check before moving on.

A successful First Aid result is encouraging, but it is not proof that the SSD is healthy. If the folder appeared after the Mac had been unreliable, back up important data as soon as you regain access.

If Disk Utility reports errors it cannot repair, shows the internal disk only intermittently, or does not show internal storage at all, stop before choosing Erase. Those signs can indicate a failing SSD, a damaged cable in some older models, or a logic board issue. Erasing a drive will not repair a physical fault, and it can make later data recovery far harder.

Choose the startup disk if macOS is still present

If your internal Macintosh HD appears in Disk Utility and First Aid completes without major errors, return to the Recovery menu and open Startup Disk. Select Macintosh HD, then restart.

This can solve the problem where the Mac has simply lost its startup disk selection. It is more common after system changes than most people realise, particularly on older machines or Macs that have previously been used with an external drive.

If Macintosh HD is visible but cannot be selected, the macOS system files may be damaged. In that case, reinstalling macOS is usually the next sensible step.

Reinstall macOS without wiping your files

From Recovery, choose Reinstall macOS and follow the on-screen steps. A standard reinstall writes fresh system files over the existing installation and should keep your personal files and user accounts in place.

“Should” is the key word. No repair process is completely risk-free when storage has errors. If you can access your files first – perhaps through an external boot option, Target Disk Mode on compatible older Macs, or another recovery method – make a backup before reinstalling.

Do not select Erase in Disk Utility unless you have a confirmed backup, have accepted the potential loss of data, or a technician has established that a clean installation is necessary. A clean erase is sometimes the right answer for a corrupted installation, but it should not be the first move when photos, coursework, business documents or customer records matter.

When the MacBook flashing folder points to hardware failure

The folder icon becomes more concerning when Recovery cannot see the internal drive. On some older MacBooks, the SATA cable connecting the hard drive or SSD can fail even when the drive itself is still usable. That is often repairable without replacing the storage.

On many newer MacBooks, however, the SSD is soldered to the logic board. A storage fault may then require board-level diagnosis rather than a straightforward drive swap. This is why the model and year of your MacBook matter – the same flashing folder can involve very different repairs.

Liquid damage is another possibility. Even a small spill can corrode components gradually, so the problem may show up weeks later rather than on the day of the accident. If your MacBook has had contact with liquid, do not keep charging or trying to start it. Power it down and arrange an assessment.

There are a few clear signs that professional help is the safer route:

  • the internal drive is missing from Disk Utility;
  • First Aid repeatedly fails or reports hardware-related errors;
  • macOS reinstall fails, stalls or the folder returns straight afterwards;
  • the Mac previously crashed, froze or reported storage issues;
  • the device has been dropped, exposed to liquid or suffered a power fault; or
  • the files on the Mac are valuable and not backed up.

Protecting your data while the fault is diagnosed

A startup fault does not give anyone permission to overlook your privacy. If you use FileVault, your data remains encrypted and requires the correct credentials for access. Keep your MacBook password and recovery key secure, and only provide them where they are genuinely needed to test access to your data.

For business users, this matters even more. A MacBook may contain client documents, school work, accounts information or locally stored project files. Tell the repairer whether data recovery is the priority before authorising an erase, a replacement drive or a macOS reinstall.

Preventing the problem from catching you out again

Once your Mac is working, set up a dependable backup routine. Time Machine with an external drive is a practical option for most home users, while cloud storage can provide an additional copy of key files. The strongest setup uses more than one copy, stored in different places.

Keep enough free storage space for macOS updates, avoid interrupting updates once they have begun, and take seriously any warning that your startup disk is nearly full. If a Mac starts becoming unusually slow, crashes during file saves or boots inconsistently, do not wait for the flashing folder to appear – back up first and have it checked.

A question-mark folder is unsettling, but it is also a useful warning to pause and make the next decision carefully. With the right diagnosis, many MacBooks can be returned to service without sacrificing the files that matter most.
